Hello, and welcome to my non-technospeak guide on getting your own FREE!! website and making it do the things that you want it to do.
One of the first things that you need is a base, something to start building on. This is called your "WebSite", "Web Page" or "Home Page". There are many places to go and visit to get one, but I would personally recomend FortuneCity. The site is accessable as soon as you have finished registering, and he amount of space you can use has recently gone up from 6 to 10 megabytes (lots and lots of room, trust me!). There is also GeoCities, but for me the time it took to display my page was too long for my liking. Visit a few other places at Free-Net. The list here is not very long, but could be useful, maybe? Keep looking until you find a place that you like.
Next, you will need to start programming your pages. If you use Netscape Navigator Gold 3.x and above, you can build a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get : Pronounced WASYWIG) page and save it in HTML format (HyperText Markup Language - this is what the internet uses to set up the pages in front of you). Click on FILE, NEW DOCUMENT. You will then get the choice of BLANK, FROM TEMPLATE, FROM WIZARD. The template and wizard are Netscapes own On-Line page makers - Template and Wizard are available here and are fairly basic and easy to use. The Blank option sets you up with a blank (funnily enough!!) page. Start typing, changing colours, sizes, alignments and indentations. It is just like a word processor. To make a link (called an "Anchor" - a pathway to another website, like this) click on the button with a chain on it, then type in the URL (the bit that starts "HTTP://").
